Claude

Chat assistant for writing, reviewing and explaining code, debugging, and drafting docs and specs.

AI coding tool by Anthropic. Free plan last checked 9 October 2026.

Is Claude free?

The free plan gives you the Sonnet and Haiku models on web, desktop and mobile. It includes web search, file creation and code execution, Artifacts, memory, connectors, skills, voice mode and up to 5 Projects.

The catch

Free does not include Claude Code, Opus or Research. Usage resets on a rolling 5-hour window, and Anthropic does not publish an exact message allowance, so heavy coding sessions can hit the cap.

Best for

  • Explaining or refactoring code you paste in
  • Building quick prototypes as Artifacts
  • Debugging from error messages and stack traces
  • Drafting specs, READMEs and API docs

How to start

  1. Go to claude.ai and sign up with email or Google
  2. Pick Sonnet in the model menu for coding work
  3. Paste your code or upload files, or start a Project for a codebase
  4. In Settings > Privacy, choose whether your chats can be used for training

Pro costs $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month billed annually. It gives at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free, and adds Claude Code, Opus, Research and unlimited Projects. Chats on Free, Pro and Max can be used for model training when the 'Help improve Claude' setting is on; you can turn it off in Privacy Settings.
